I went to a !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! on Friday in Melbourne and saw a Laser Lynx.

Kinja'd!!!

I think I’ve seen two of these ever. For some reason they decided to make the 3-door Laser a freak of a thing, probably to get in line with the New Edge styling on the AU Falcon. Ford was in a weird place at the time. They were trying , but generally failing as far as I can tell. It’s a shame when that happens.

Kinja'd!!!

Kamback? Split rear window? Call it what you like, it’s crap and in no way the equal of the CRX

Kinja'd!!!

The AU Falcon was a bit of a mess. All the New Edge cars were a bit of a mess.

Bonus: I also saw this immaculate 80s Mitsubishi Colt. My friend had one for his first car, it was a 4-speed manual and only had 1 side mirror as the other was an option. This car looks to be highly specced indeed.

He now has a rather potent Ralliart Colt. It has a tiny engine with a decent turbo. Driving it is equal parts turbo lag and front-wheelspin - nothing in between. Also an Evo VI TME. Mitsubishi do a bit better over here, he’s a Mitsubishi guy.

It looks like the bastard child of an Aspire, an Isuzu Impulse, a CRX, and a Hyundai Tiburon (one of the ugly ones with the frog eyes). In the words of Jeremy Clarkson;

New Edge was a bit of a nightmare for non-US cars, because what came before New Edge in the US was a downright travesty.

Looks a bit like a C230 compact, and a first gen neon had a baby.

There was a gross trend of cars with those stupid headlight covers in the 90s wasn’t there. I always wonder if there’s the same old headlight under there, or if it’s actually something bespoke.

Strange thing, I saw a Laser (grey market of course) in eastern BC a couple years ago. I had to do a double take. Of all the things to import.

Yeah but New Edge somehow managed to improve them...

Wow. That’s half decent. We never got that one.

Eh, it was even more boring than the contemporary Camry with none of the quality, so you weren’t missing much. It just made it easier to drive down the road without wanting to gouge your eyes out every time you saw a Taurus.

Personally I do value that in a car

The Mazda version looked a bit duller, but better, in my opinion (323C):

We never got a 3-door 323 I don’t think. Closest we got was this. Not as interesting as the Lynx, but just as ugly:

It reminds me of a chubby CRX. You just want to punch it’s face.

Also Mitsubishi’s are great :p
